GROSSE POINTE WOODS— Grosse Pointe North’s softball season came to an end with a 4-3 loss to Garden City High in a Division 1 regional final June 10 at Grosse Pointe South.
North had a 3-1 lead in the last half of the eighth inning until Garden City senior Alicia Ascencio hit a walk-off three-run home run to advance her team to the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs.
With the game tied 1-1 after seven innings of play, North junior Caitlyn Knorp scored two runs with a base hit that gave her team a lead in the top of the eighth.
Ascencio’s home run came with one out and runners on first and second in the bottom of the eighth.
“We were waiting for somebody to hit a ball hard,” Garden City coach Barry Patterson said following the game. “We finally did at the right time. It was perfect timing.”
April Rudolph was Garden City’s pitcher of record.

North coach Ron Smith said his team did a lot of growing this season, and he was pleased with the group of girls he had the opportunity to coach.
“We got a good squad, between the kids, the parents — wonderful group,” he said. “It’s been a fun time working with these kids.”
Smith also commented on junior Rebecca Alway, who pitched a complete game for North.
“She’s wonderful,” he said. “One of our best hitters on the team; obviously our No.1 pitcher. The kid’s a treat to have — a wonderful competitor. She leaves it all on the field.”
The Norsemen beat Detroit Renaissance 7-0 in a semifinal contest earlier in the day.
North won its first district championship since 2012 and finished at 13-19.
